one of Soul music's most underrated vocalists ever, the Superb O.V Wright

A truly incendiary deep soul performer. O. V. Wright's melismatic vocals and Willie Mitchell's vaunted Hi Rhythm Section combined to make classic Memphis soul during the early 70s.

Overton Vertis Wright learned his trade on the gospel circuit with the Sunset Travelers before going secular in 1964 with the passionate ballad "That's How Strong My Love Is" for Goldwax in Memphis. Otis Redding liked the song so much that he covered it, killing any chance of Wright's version hitting.

Since Wright was already under contract to Houston-based Peacock as a gospel act, owner Don Robey demanded his return, and from then on, Wright appeared on Robey's Backbeat subsidiary.

Wright's sanctified sound oozes sweet soul on the spine-chilling "You're Gonna Make Me Cry," a 1965 smash, but it took Memphis producer Willie Mitchell to bring the best consistently from Wright. Utilizing Mitchell's surging house rhythm section, Wright's early-'70s Backbeat singles "Ace of Spades," "A Nickel and a Nail," and "I Can't Take It" rank among the very best Southern soul of their era.

No disco bandwagon for O. V. Wright -- he kept right on pouring out his emotions through the '70s, convincing his faithful that "I'd Rather Be (Blind, Crippled & Crazy)" and that he was "Into Something (Can't Shake Loose)." Unfortunately, he apparently was -- drugs have often been cited as causing Wright's downfall; the soul great died at only 41 years of age in 1980.

Like the other Art Ensemble record on Nessa, Les Stances A Sophie, this one was recorded in France on the beautiful July 7, 1969 during one of the most fruitful periods for the group.

Unlike that one, though, this one is a very different recording musically.

The LP features one long track, the title cut, and the music is very spare, with lots of nice isolated bass work, horn solos, and percussion.

The group here is a quartet

Fuzzy, funky genius from the great Jack McDuff --

a killer late 60s set done for Chess Records, and one that mixes his own searing Hammond with wicked arrangements from the mighty Richard Evans!

Given Evans' background in the Chicago soul scene, there's a gritty groove here you don't get on some of Jack's other jazz sides of the 60s, a sound that steps out strongly to the clubs, as you might guess from the cover and title!

Many numbers have a sweetly stepping groove that's subtle funk at its best -- opened up with lots of room for McDuff to solo brilliantly on the organ, with support from players who include Gene Barge on alto sax, Ben Branch and Cliff Davis on tenor, Jerry Byrd or Cash McCall on guitar, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Joe Burkes or Morris Jennings on drums. Half the set was recorded in the Chess studios, the other half out at the hip London House club in Chicago -- and together, the tunes are united beautifully in one magnificently funky album that stretches from the studio out into the streets.

Titles include the best version ever of McDuff's "Theme From The Electric Surfboard", plus "On The Case", "With The Wind", "Mac-Duffin", "Get It Up", "Gin & Orange", and "Beep Bo Boo" -- all tunes written either by Jack or Richard Evans!

Amazing! This fantastic album by Jack McDuff is one of his best from the late 60's, and it almost never turns up on vinyl anymore.

The album's a massive set of grooves that pits McDuff's funky organ against some very heavy soul jazz arrangements by Richard Evans. Evans provides a beautiful set of grooves for McDuff to solo over, and the arrangements never get bogged down in any hokiness, or any sort of predictable sound.

The set sparkles with imagination, and while it brings to light a lot of the whimsy and humor that McDuff adds to his solos in a live setting, it also adds a tightness that doesn't always show up on other records by him.

Nearly every cut's a winner, and titles include "Let My People Go", "Who Stole My Soul?", "Funky Guru", "Ain't It?", "The Natural Thing", and the most amazing version of "Con Alma" you'll ever hear!

So I wanted to post up a few of my favorite Jack McDuff Albums..

I remember when Q-tip looped up Jack McDuff's "Oblighetto" for the original Scenario, and EVERYONE started looking for his albums..

I was up on him just prior to the frenzy

first of Jack's albums I ever dug up was " Sophisticated Funk"

unlike his usual Hammond organ outings, he plays electric piano on this album.

& Like many of the records i was REALLY into in that period of digging

The vibe of the album sounds very much like a Creed Taylor produced set from CTI Records

Brother to Brother's Billy Jones, who also plays guitar on the record

takes the job of arranger on this one

it includes a great remake of "Theme From Electric Surfboard",

and then of course, there's the cover..

Iam going to start off the year with a few sample ready soundtracks

It is hard to believe that Louis and Bebe Barron, who created what is generally acknowledged as the first electronic motion picture score for FORBIDDEN PLANET in 1956, didn’t continue to compose scores for Hollywood films.

This soundtrack, would set the standard for all futuristic fantasy films. what we think of as background "space" music comes from this couples vision

Yet the real reason they didn’t continue working in feature films is because the Musicians Union denied them membership because it didn’t consider their FORBIDDEN PLANET score “music.”

Instead, MGM was pressured to label the Barrons’ contribution as “electronic tonalities” in their promotion and Louis and Bebe returned to what they loved – making electronic music for experimental short films and recording projects.

sounds familiar huh? well thankfully electronic musicians were granted their

respect as "musicians"

anyway, this is a GREAT place for samples as well..

at 1st listen you will recognize the DJ Premier sampled

while widely regarded as classic hip hops most disappointing debut album

(one that fans REALLY wanted)

this is MC Craig G's Debut Album "The kingpin"

if your listening, don't blame me for the bad sound quality

the mix on this album was really bad..distorted vocals, and just bad mixes overall..

as well as some of Marley Marls weakest production work..

but i couldn't post up the 2nd album and not throw this one up for collectors..

An obscure gem of jazz funk, with a sound very similar to

some of his own work on Arista during the late 70s.

while probably more known for the title track of this album

“It’s You” is my rare find on this one, which features lead vocals by session singer extrodinaire Stephanie Spruill it's a rare groove soul number that is sample ready

the rest of the album grooves along at a great pace as well

YMA SUMAC - MIRACLES

Yma Sumac is not a name known by very many people,

but her voice is instantly recognizable.

From Peru, she pioneered a style called Exotica, blending Jazz, Tropical and Oceania styles.

here we have what was considered her "rock " album "Miracles" produced/arranged by well known composer Les Baxter

No lounge, exotica or easy-listening compilation

is complete without a song from this Peruvian soprano.

Born in 1922 as Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo she assumed the name of Yma Sumac from the phrase "Ima Shumaq" which translates as “how beautiful” in her own native language,

Yma is THE stereotypical exotic diva with the unbelievable voice and the temper that accompanies it.

There isn't much to say about Jimmy McGriff's playing style, or how funky many of his albums were..

Jimmy McGriff's childhood friend, organist Jimmy Smith, had begun earning a substantial reputation in jazz for his Blue Note records (the two played together once in 1967) and McGriff became entranced by the organ sound while Richard "Groove" Holmes played at his sister's wedding. Holmes went on to became McGriff's teacher,

McGriff bought his first Hammond B-3 organ in 1956, spent six months learning the instrument, then studied at New York's Juilliard School of Music. He also studied privately with Milt Buckner, & Jimmy Smith,

McGriff formed a combo that played around Philadelphia and often featured tenor sax player, Charles Earland (who soon switched permanently to organ, and became one of the instrument's renowned performers). During this time, McGriff also accompanied such artists as Don Gardner, Arthur Prysock, Candido and Carmen McRae who came through town for local club dates.

In 1961, McGriff's trio was offered the chance to record an instrumental version of Ray Charles' hit "I've Got a Woman" by Joe Lederman's Jell Records, a small independent label. When the record received substantial local airplay, Juggy Murray's Sue label picked it up and recorded a full album of McGriff's trio, released in 1962. The album also turned out another huge hit in McGriff's "All About My Girl", establishing McGriff's credentials as a fiery blues-based organist, well-versed in gospel soul and fatback groove.

McGriff recorded a series of popular albums for the Sue label between 1962 and 1965, ending with what still stands as one of his finest examples of blues-based jazz, Blues for Mister Jimmy. When producer Sonny Lester started his Solid State record label in 1966, he recruited McGriff to be his star attraction. Lester framed McGriff in many different groups, performing a wide variety of styles and giving the organist nearly unlimited opportunities to record.

McGriff was heard everywhere from an all-star tribute to Count Basie (The Big Band), a series of "Organ and Blues Band" records (such as A Thing to Come By (1969), pop hits ("Cherry", "The Way You Look Tonight") and funk classics (Electric Funk and singles such as "The Worm" and "Step 1").

During this time, McGriff performed at clubs and concert halls worldwide. He settled in Newark, New Jersey, and eventually opened his own supper club, the Golden Slipper - where he recordedBlack Pearl and a live album with Junior Parker in 1971. Beginning in 1969, he also performed regularly with Buddy Rich's band, though the two were only recorded once together in 1974 on The Last Blues Album Volume 1).

McGriff "retired" from the music industry in 1972 to start a horse farm in Connecticut. But Sonny Lester's new record company, Groove Merchant, kept issuing McGriff records at a rate of three or four a year. By late 1973, McGriff was touring relentlessly and actively recording again. Around this time, disco was gaining a hold in jazz music and McGriff's flexibility proved infallible. He produced some of his best music during this period: Stump Juice (1975), Red Beans (1976) and Outside Looking In (1978).

Lurking in the shadows of Dennis Coffey on Sussex Records was another funky guitarist from Detroit, Eddy Senay. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information about Senay's background, but he recorded a couple of LPs that are well worth seeking out.

More Grant Green than Eddie Hazel, Senay's style is understated and may appear too slow for casual fans. But the demand for "Cameo," "Safari," and his take on labelmate Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" attests to the pure funk at the core of his sophisticated playing.

This is the first album cut by the amazing Eddie Senay!

The record's all-instrumental and Eddie's fuzzed-out guitar takes center stage over tripped-out arrangements that recall the best psychedelic funk of the early 70s

bubbling along with just enough drums, bass, and keyboards to make for a chunky bottom groove -- while Senay wails over the top on guitar! The record reminds us of similar guitar funk albums from the time, including the work of Dennis Coffey, Eddie Fisher, or Donald Austin --

but the groove's even more laidback and trippy, with a few nice breakway moments from the rhythm section. Tracks include "Jubo", "Hot Thang", "Message of Love", and great covers of "Ain't No Sunshine" and Donny Hathaway's "Zambezi"

The second Sussex album from guitarist Eddie Senay and arguably even better than the first! Again the tracks here are all instrumentals mixed with keyboards from Rudy Robinson, who also arranged the numbers on the set.

There's kind of a choppy early 70s soundtrack funk groove to the whole set, with Eddie's guitar bad-stepping its way over Rudy's sweet keyboards all in a relatively lean groove that's laidback and loose.

I thought i'd post up a few acts that morphed during their time in the spotlight..

Im going to start with Maxayn.

Like the members of Blondie (who still explain to fans and press that Debbie Harry was one member of the group Blondie, that her name is not “Blondie,”)

Maxayn was husband & wide Maxayn Lewis & Andre Lewis, Emilio Thomas, and fellow super-session musician Marlo Henderson (later, Hank Redd).

While the group did not have much commercial success, though their music is respected by fans of rare groove and is remembered fondly by those who had hip musical tastes in the early 70s. Their music was in my opinion, what Sly Stone's Back up singers "little Sister's album would have sounded like if it was written and produced by Sly & Roberta Flack

Maxayn called it quits after 3 albums in 1974, BUT the group did not die.

Rather, it morphed into a new group, born in 1977, was called Mandre and kept the core of the Maxayn group intact.

This time the concept was futuristic space funk/disco complete with tons of synthesizers and blipping electronics. Maxayn’s hubby Andre was at the helm, Maxayn Lewis was no longer singing lead in this group, but doing backup vocals, as well as songwriting and playing.

And the Motown promotions machine tried to hype Mandre as being “funkier than Parliament.” I have a differnt feeling which i go into in the post..

anyway, Mandre finally called it quits in 1979.

For nine years, Cosby released at least an album a year since 1964. After a three-year hiatus, this was his first comedy album since 1973's Fat Albert, and he wouldn't return to a full-fledged stand-up album again until My Father Confused Me... What Must I Do? What Must I Do?

This is also his first album on Capitol Records. In this, his fourth musical album release, he parodies various rhythm and blues artists including James Brown and Barry White. The songs were written with producer/keyboardist Stu Gardner.

The first single, "Yes, Yes, Yes", became one of Cosby's biggest charted hits after "Little Ole Man (Uptight, Everything's Alright)", reaching number 46 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 11 on the Billboard rhythm and blues singles chart.

The song spoofed Barry White's deep-voiced spoken word monologues. "Ben" was sampled by Jurassic 5 on their 2002 song "After School Special".

The album consisted mostly of straightforward rhythm and blues performances, including severalJimmy Reed songs, a cover version of Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" with slightly comedic lyrics, "Mojo Workout", which was a sequel to the Muddy Waters classic "I Got My Mojo Workin'", and "Little Ole Man" which combined a comedic monologue with Stevie Wonder's "Uptight, Everything's Alright".

Also included is an original song credited to Cosby, "Don'cha Know".

"Little Ole Man" became a major hit upon release as a single, attaining gold record status for selling one million copies in the United States and reaching #4 on the U.S. Hot 100 chart.

It was Cosby's only hit song.

The Lost Generation were formed in 1969 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1970, they achieved their most successful moment with their single 'The Sly, Slick and Wicked',

Lowrell Simon was the original lead singer and songwriter, an artist later to achieve success with the Soul song 'Mellow Mellow, Right On' later in the decade.

when 'The Sly, Slick and Wicked' was released. The song was so popular that it generated sufficient income for Brunswick Records to buy themselves out from the Decca imprint, and become an entity on their own.

Of course this also includes the sample used by Jaheim for his hit single
"Every time i think about her feat Jadakiss"

Again another staple that i would have thought was a regular in most peoples collections...
but some don't know what's up..

All music guide sums it up pretty well..

Herbie Hancock extends the reach of his Head Hunters-vintage electric music into the soundtrack field, with some switchbacks to earlier styles and old-fashioned movie suspense music thrown into the eclectic mix. Jerry Peters provides the requisite orchestral backgrounds, and the wah-wah guitar licks give some indication as to where Herbie's funk music would be going in the future. The main title music is the best track -- tense, streaked with Hancock's echo-delayed electric piano and understated orchestrations. A good deal of the record, alas, is filled by listless film cues that are meaningless without the action in front of you. Still, the results are, in general, more intriguing than usual for the film genre. ~

Leroy Hutson is a soul music legend, he
Replaced Curtis Mayfield as lead singer for The Impressions in 1970 when Curtis Mayfield wanted to concentrate even more on his Curtom label and solo career.

Leroy Hutson was a room-mate to Donny Hathaway and co-wrote Hathaway's own 1970 hit 'The Ghetto'.

The first Impressions single featuring Hutson was 'Love Me' released on Curtom in 1971 and raised eyebrows as it was so different in sound from the previous material with Mayfield. However, the group appeared in U.K. in 1972 and stunned the audiance by is amazing ability to duplicate live the lengendery vocal sound of his predessor on their 60's hits.

Leaved The Impressons in 1973 for a solo career still with the Curtom label.
Leroy Hutson proved to be an extremely talented and creative musician, not only as a fine near-falseto vocalist but also as a keyboard wizard and gifted writer and producer. His contract with Custom records ended in December 1979.

After working as a writer and producer for such soul music stalwarts as Donny Hathaway and a stint replacing Curtis Mayfield as the lead vocalist in The Impressions, Leroy Hutson embarked on a solo career with 1973's Love Oh Love.

The album combines the kind of smooth soul music that Hutson performed with The Impressions with more ambitious and conceptual outings in the vein of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

When Hutson sticks to love songs, Love Oh Love is magical: "So in Love With You" combines a honey-sweet romantic vocal from Hutson with a spine-tingling string arrangement to create an elegant and heartfelt ballad, while the title track raises its tale of lost love to an up-tempo level with jazzy horns and a percolating rhythm arrangement. "As Long as There's Love Around" is another effective romantic track that layers Hutson's velvety vocals over a complex instrumental track that combines gentle strings and brash horns with an insistently grooving bassline.

Nothing on the album is less than listenable and everything flows together nicely to create a cohesive (if somewhat short) album. In short, Love Oh Love is one of the most consistent albums in the Leroy Hutson catalog and a good introduction to his silky soul style.

Well Known for her role in the group Faith, Hope and Charity
before setting off on a successful solo career..

Zulema was born Zulema Cusseaux in Tampa, Florida. She and her school friend Brenda Hilliard joined a local group called The 5 Crystals before the two formed the trio the Lovelles together with fellow Tampa native Albert Bailey.

When they met producer Van McCoy and were signed by Maxwell records, the group's name was changed to Faith, Hope and Charity.

Their song "So Much Love" hit #15 on the R&B chart and #60 on the pop chart in 1970. Zulema left Faith, Hope and Charity shortly after a label switch to Sussex Records. Bailey and Hilliard would occasionally sing backing vocals on Zulema's albums, though.

Her self-titled solo album included the song "American Fruit, African Roots" and a cover of "If This World Were Mine." Zulema started touring as opening act for major stars like Bill Withers. She appeared on a bill with Roberta Flack, Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Earth, Wind and Fire and Sly Stone at the Push Expo in Chicago, a concert which became a motion picture called "Save the Children". The movie's soundtrack was released on Motown Records and included Zulema's single mother anthem, This Child of Mine.

After a second Sussex album, Ms Z (produced by Bobby Taylor, the singer signed to RCA records, where she released three albums: Zulema, R.S.V.P. and Suddenly There Was You. She was also one of the featured artists on the soundtrack to the Michael Schultz movie Honeybaby, Honeybaby, providing the track "I Just Can't Say Good-Bye."

Her only charting record during that time was a cover of the early Michael Jackson Motown hit Wanna Be Where You Are, which reached #58 R&B. In 1978, she released the album Z-Licious on Le Joint Records in 1978, which featured a duet with long-term collaborator Van McCoy. McCoy also got Zulema on board for Aretha Franklin's 1979 disco album La Diva - having her write one of the songs and perform backing vocals on the entire album, joined once again by her former band members Hilliard and Bailey.

In 1982, Zulema formed a duo called Zalmac with Al Macdowell. Their album "Whatcha Gonna Do" on TSOB included the songs Friends, I Get Down and What's In It For Me. Zulema had recorded at least on single on the same label, A Mother Cries, the year before.

As an accomplished pianist & songwriter Zulema wrote a lot of the tracks, plays piano, and sings in a very deep soul voice that's equal parts gospel and equal parts 70s soul

much more stripped down than on later sides, and with a really earthy feel - especially on cuts like "Ain't It Sad", "American Fruit, African Roots", and "This Child Of Mine".

Debbie Taylor was a black American female vocalist whose short recording career between 1968 and 1975 saw her produce some of the most impassioned vocal performances ever committed to vinyl.

Her sudden unexplained departure from the music industry and the lyrical content of her last ever recording "I don't wanna' leave you" have been the cause of much speculation with parallels having been drawn with a lot of the mythology surrounding blues guitarist and singer Robert Johnston.

Little is known about her background, date of birth etc, but she has achieved iconic status with fans of soul music due, in the main, to her pairing / partnership with songwriter / producers David Jordan and Patrick Adams

Taylor's tenure with Today was another short stint. It resulted in the album Comin' down on You, and one single released from it. Many regard this as her most productive / prolific period as a singer. Her collaboration with Adams, the then manager / producer and co-writer for label mates Black Ivory, resulted in her covering the track "No if's, and's or but's".

Funky keyboard tracks from Julius Brockington -- a mad early 70s figure who not only cut some wild funk, but who also ended up doing a fair bit of gospel work in later years. This set's a good bit of stoner funk tracks -- in the wilder mode of the Perception/Today label -- and it's got production by Boo Frazier and Patrick Adams that is very "hands off" when it comes to Brockington's keys.

The track list includes covers of some soul stuff like "Rock Steady" and "Do Your Thing" (which is done in a nice long version), plus a good original called "Cold Water
